We should note that the concept of Ethics in different cultures and societies may not be similar and we should rely on things in common.

Nursing ethics has to be inculcated during their graduation. However it has to be sustained by appreciating their contribution not only in words bout also by monetary compensation.

Monetary compensation to nursing students? It does never make sense. Humans do not behave or change their behavor in such a way. Ethics is about virtue and value, Not achievements.

Although Ethics is a cultural concept, many ethical items are in common in different culture. I think all of the cultures in countries admire truth, honesty and humanity that are essential items in nursing.

Aristotle's Nichomachian Ethics is worth while reading, also those of Confucius. The nurse or nursing student needs to be virtuous but this is difficult if the environment does not promote virtue or if they are considered as lesser beings. The nurse and /or student should promote and be able to contribute a good working environment. Eudaimonia. We cannot live on bread alone.

Nursing ethics is a concept that needs to form part of nursing curriculum from the onset of studies. How do we instill truth, honesty and humanity in students entering the nursing profession?

Truth, honesty and humanity come at least in part from a person's family background, beliefs and upbringing. Nursing education would be building upon these.

In nursing education, we try to awake the good behaviors in our students. They should have the ethical believes before entering to nursing profession based on family background, beliefs and upbringing as Kerre has written.

Nader Aghakhani and Kerre Ann Willsher I fully agree with you. Then my next question is: should we then have these characteristics being built into an evaluation of students before their entry into the nursing profession?

What is your answer to the Marieta's question?

Probably there should be an evaluation of students entering nursing and tertiary education generally, but there is also the risk of being judgmental. Who will set up this evaluation? What is the evaluator's background. It is tricky.

I would also like to add Kerre's answer based on my experiences. In this discussion, I know that we mainly talk about ethics in nursing practice; however, I have seen so many unethical nursing professors that have negative effects on doctoral/master students' research ethics. We all already know the ethical principles well. However, the customary practice surpasses the the ethical principles, which is the crux of the problem. Due to imbalance of political power between professors and students, students can barely disagree with those unethical professors' instructions/guidelines. I believe that we all need to pay attention on this issue and we all should make an effort to achieve better justice in both academia and practice. In order to do that, a continuous education and monitoring and a reformation of organizational culture to the ethical culture are all required.

Yes I agree with all your comments, however, how do we counteract unethical professors' instructions/guidelines? How do we differentiate when the educators in the profession is indeed unethical? What tool sets could be set up to prevent these perceptions and peer reviews from colleagues?

It is virtually very hard to correct such a customary practice because people do not want to face with the sensitive issue. Professors tend to ignore students' correction requests and rather punish the students for the requests. Some renowned professors could reject papers that criticize or outstrip their works. That is the reason why I developed the editorial (please see above). I have also written up a special note, politely asking the editorial-in-chief to consider my request that I want the EIC to select peer reviewers who can provide a "fair" feedback. I explains why I ask him/her such a request in great detail. We cannot control the other's decision or behavior. I think that those actions are the best way in an individual level. However, I hope that the issue is open to the public so that we can make a difference in changing our way of thinking and behavior. This is because ethics is about virtue and value, not the carrot and the stick.

I am presently a PhD student. A way forward that I can see is ethical solidarity between students and allies. The universities do have guidelines and procedures in place, but it is difficult because of power-bases, and the reporter of the unethical behaviour seems to always get "burned". Appears to be worse for female students. A solidarity of the ethical people is required. Build up your support base, don't try going it alone. Guess you can see that I am a feminist. Kerre

Promoting ethics in nursing or elsewhere is pretty tough when there are few examples of ethical leadership.

You might like to have a look at Carper's forms of knowing. A little old now, but for me has a greater balance between other forms of knowing and ethics.

Nurses entering the profession must be held to a high standard from the start of their training. By saying that we must expecting excellence from them, I do not mean that ward sisters should be like drill sergeants, but rather lead in a positive manner. Change their locus of motivation from complying to avoid being in trouble, to complying in order to give the patient effective, efficient and compassionate care. Treat our novice nurses with respect, especially the ones that start of being better qualified. Listen to them, they have the latest information and guide them to being not only being a learned professional, but also a caring professional. Do not accept students into this profession who are in this only to earn a salary one day. There are thousands of other directions they can pursue. This profession is not for the faint - hearted. The basics of ethics are being taught in all nursing programmes on a theoretical level, but true ethical decision-making requires emotional maturity and resilience which cannot be taught, but comes from experiential knowledge. Experience takes time. Be patient with our novices, lead with example, as mentioned previously, hold them to a high standard, and they will get there

What standards do you mean?

Nader Aghakhani, I think the standards that are referred to is the standards in conducting nursing care and making ethical decisions on a daily basis. I agree with Rochelle's statement.

I’m not sure if anybody has bothered to read carper as per my earlier post. It’s all about balance. We’ve swung to science of nursing. Carper argues there are three other forms of knowing. One is ethics. We need to get it back in balance. Ive been a nurse for over 40 years the swing to science is too strong.

I agree with you. Thanks for reminding us of Carper's ways of knowing.

In my experience, because of cultural differences in morals and values attitudes relating to ethical decision making may differ greatly. The western way of applying science and looking at health has been regarded as superior for many years. It is only fairly recently in my experience that more emphasis is placed on cultural competence as part of caring for a patient or each other holistically. Our values and morals may then differ depending on cultural differences. This needs to be kept in mind in teaching ethics. I know that are numerous models of ethical decision making described in the literature, I have not researched how cultural differences come into play with any of those models, which are mostly western, but it would be an interesting angle on the subject. (Remember, I just respond from a practical viewpoint and from my experiences, no time for checking the literature)

Confucious's writings on ethics could be useful. Madeleine Leininger's work may also be useful. Tuhiwai-Smith as well. The nurse should be open to the cultural views of the service user. Nurses today come from many cultural backgrounds. There could also be cultural commonalities of ethics.

This is very interesting subject, I agree with Rochelle Isaacs, according to my little experience I think one of the main problems is that the teaching of Nursing Professional Ethics is somehow ignored or it is not being taught as it has to be. So, most of the new graduated nurses in my country (Iraq) for example, and also in Iran and Syria (examples) are not knowledgeable about the codes of nursing Ethics. Thus the cultures of individual nurses will play its role to be the guidance for the nurses ethic wise.

I believe that we have to reassess the way of teaching nursing ethics and improve itin a hand; and in the other hand following up the nurses in the hospitals and health care centers ethic wise. Thus we can promote ethics in nursing.

The only way to promote ethics in nursing is by institutionalizing ethics training for all practicing nurses. All nurses to have an ethics profile file and finally to design an instrument that can measure nursing ethics in our facilities

Both institutionalizing ethics training and a powerful and exact law is necessary! Nursing is depended on human life and needs ethics monitoring seriously.

What about developing a self-monitoring tool on ethical practice for practicing nurses and nurse teachers both?

We need a good environment and adequate staffing in nursing for ethics to flourish.

I am going to venture further and state that ethics is essential for a good working environment. There is a form of cycle or process. None of this is original, it comes from Aristotle's "Nichomachean Ethics. " Eudaimonia or "good life" which will vary from person to person or place to place. Ethics and a good environment go together. Self-monitoring or examination would be included in this.

I think nursing ethics should be holistic and be monitored precisely in all of the health settings.

Ethics is a common and inter-professional concept and is relate to other professions' ethics.

Ethics education that is ongoing is very important. Ethics education is a lifelong necessity. Organizations that uphold ethical practices are rewarding places. I have witnessed ethical cases that were handled so well by the organization. I felt proud to be part of the way the cases were handled because it was done right.
