How can we profile information systems?
Are there any benchmarks, models etc.?

I was in research to evaluate and compare the accounting information systems. This is applicable to the entire enterprise information system. I am sending you some articles.
Your question is interesting. It has no straight forward answer according to my judgement. If you say IS then it opens up a world full of opportunities. What IS you are talking about? Is there really a universal definition or context of IS? I do not think so. Therefore, your question can not be honestly answered by mentioning some model, frameworks etc. universally.
Before asking yourself about bench marking it would be wise to identify what kind of IS we are talking about. In which context an IS would be used?´Who are the stakeholders? Then you can bring the question of comparison into discussion.
I could refer you some of my articles here but that would not be wise to imply universally. That is to say, my articles would give you different models and frameworks which were written in different IS context but not to generalize IS. Any given model and framework could be used to evaluate IS within that specific context, this is what I truly believe. Finding a universal bench marking solution is a complex and big challenge. Even though someone claims to establish such model I would be highly skeptical about the impact or practice of such since it would be highly complicated to imply.
Your question at this way is more like ' how to profile food?' While a food evaluating framework could exist, it would be complex to use the same model to evaluate Indian and Italian foods. Instead it would be much wiser to have an evaluation method for Italian food and Indian food respectively. Hope I make sense on what I am trying to say here.
I agree with Moyen's assessment. IS is a system composed of people and computers that processes and interprets information. This could take on many different frameworks or models such as ERPs, knowledge management collaboration sites, decision support systems, etc., so trying to profile all information systems would be virtually impossible, and quite frankly wouldn't make much cogent sense.
Can we profile information systems of all the companies in a given geography of interest? Are there any benchmarks, models etc.? Please advise how to go about in this direction?
Rekha, I would say that even the suggestion of profiling information systems of "all" companies in a given geography of interest would be an extremely daunting task at best. Without knowing what your overall goal is in this endeavor, I would recommend maybe profiling similar IS's of similar companies in a particular market or segment would be a significant research effort in and of itself.
Ambitious one! but nothing is impossible.
