How can we prevent fungus growing outside of clay water filter wall?

We are developing pot type clay based water filters and we observed fungus growing out side the filter wall.

I have to go on my memory that some 20 years ago there were some papers on silver exchanged on clay to prevent this type of problems in e.g. in coatings used on boats. Might be worth to look into.
