Hydrogen is a clean fuel. Its usage has many benefits. It is easily available. But many students do not know it. textbooks have an important role in this. How can we introduce hydrogen as a clean fuel in textbooks?
Hydrogen as a „clean“ fuel? You say it is easily available, but is it really so? My modest knowledge (I left university long time ago) tells me hydrogen does not exist as a gas in nature. A few years ago I read stories about hydrgen hydrate existing as quite large deposits under oceans, but I have not read about this in the last years.
So, hydrogen is hardly a natural resource you can tap as you extract natural gas or crude oil from wells. Hydrogen gas has to be man made first. And it requires a lot of energy to produce hydrogen gas. If you want to teach hydrogen as a clean fuel, make sure you look closely at its energy balance. It certainly would be an interesting topic in thermodynamics classes. If you need more energy to make hydrogen than what you get from burning it, does it still make much sense?
