We are trying to make polyacrylamide hydrogels with tunable stiffness on cell culture plates with a cyclic olefin plastic bottom. The problem we have is that polyacrylamide gel does not attach to that kind of plastic. Does anybody know a solution for that problem? How can we functionalize cyclic olefin for polyacrylamide hydrogel attachment?

The standard pretreatment of polyethylene film prior to printing is corona discharge i.e. sparking the surface with a high voltage discharge in air. This makes the print adhere to the surface. A more drastic treatment is with suphur trioxide gas which is very reactive and attacks the surface of the polymer producing SO3 groups.
Perhaps functionalization of the cyclic polyolefine can be done without covalent bonds. Perhaps it is sufficient to swell the polyolefine surface with a hydrophobic surfactant like castor oil, Span 80, Aliquat 336... The lipophilic tails will diffuse in the polymer and the hydrophilic head should migrate at the surface so that there is a better adhesion to the hydrogel.
