I am performing laser drilling experiments and want to calculate the circularity of hole. In some articles it is mentioned as ratio of maximum to minimum Feret diameter of hole, while in some papers it is mentioned as ratio of minimum to maximum Feret diameter of hole which creates a confusion. Could anyone please guide.
From my point of view the best circularity is described by 1. In this sense, the relation must be minimum to maximum.

Hi, I am also looking for the same thing which is the circularity of holes produce by 3D printer. Do you have any support document (e.g journal) to support that circularity of hole = ratio of minimum to maximum diameter of hole. That you can share with me?
From my reading, if you use the ratio of minimum to maximum, its look like you use Least Square Circle (LSC) method as a reference, right?

The circularity is defined by standards (ISO 1101 or ASME Y14.5) as a radial distance of two concentric circle, which cover the contour of the produced circle.
But there are several ways how can you calculated it.
You need at least 4 coordinate points aroud the contour, and than
a) calculate the gergession circle based on least square method (LS), and calculate the distance of the points from the center of the LS circle, the circulariti will be the difference of min and max values.
b) calculate an inner envelope circle based on 3 points, where every other point ther are outside the circle, calculate the distances from the centre, circularity = max - R
c) calculate an outer envelope circle based on 3 points, where every other point ther are inside the circle, calculate the distances from the centre, circularity = R-min
d) minimum zone method: find the position and the radius of two concentric circle whic cover every points and the distance between the radius has minimum value

Can you use Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) to measure circularity of hole? Last time we found circularity through CMM in order to find machining distorsion.

If the hole size is in micrometer, then take a microscopic image of that hole at a suitable magnification and easily you can measure. It is the easiest method.
