In the absence of institutional mail id you can also approach RG support for including you in RG. I have seen such instances and they help if you have one publication at least.

Its very simple, just invite your fellow researcher, especially if he/she has at least being featured in one of your articles/research papers.
I invite one of my fellow researcher without an institutional email, what I did was; I crested a project and I added him as a collaborator, then researchgate ask me to invite him, all I did was click on the invite button and the next day he's on research gate too.
