So kind of you Louis but I don't want to extract RNA immediately. So, I need to preserve the infected cells. How can I preserve the cells and extract RNA later?
Oh that's a bit harder... I don't know how many cells with intact RNAs you'll preserve, but you can easily figure that out.
But, you can try a DMSO:FBS (or other stabilizer) formulation (I don't know exactly, a general cell literature database search on the line you're working on should do the trick) to preserve live cells and put them into cryotubes for freezing in a -80ºC alcohol minibath O/N then LN2 for longer-term freezing (or just -80ºC for relatively short term). Just make sure it's very clearly marked as biohazardous if it's a [human] pathogenic virus, and in a separate box!
