I want to understand the relationship between citizenship and taxpayer awareness
I believe that taxpayer awareness is an important foundation and prerequisite for civic awareness, and civic awareness is a general expression of taxpayer awareness. At present, citizens in some developing countries, who have no civic consciousness at all, think that civil servants are officials, rulers rather than servants. They also have no sense of saying "no" when taxes are abused. Therefore, how can the awakening of citizenship be realized from the perspective of taxation or from the perspective of taxpayers?
This could be measured regarding the social studies or civic course curriculum. Kids are raised to be good citizens of the country so financial literacy is given within social courses with an interdisciplinary approach. I would recommend exploring the potential of digital government initiatives to promote taxpayer awareness. I used to work for the Government of Canada, and there were efforts to make digital platforms to better inform and consult with Canadians. One such platform was GCcollab: https://gccollab.ca.
I recall feeling that there was a need for a more centralized online platform for all of an individual's interactions with their government that alleviates siloed approaches within different government departments. Such a platform could perhaps help connect an individual with all the benefits they are eligible for, provide them with a breakdown of how their tax dollars are spent, and make it easier to enact accountability and/or democratic mechanisms.
