I would fall back on Post-Marxist theory. The classic book is "The Political Unconscious” by Fredrick Jameson (1981) and also you can read the first chapter of the book “Against Literature” (John Beverly, 1993). Here, this author makes a breath-taken close-reading of the sonnet XXIII by the Spanish renaissance poet Garcilaso de la Vega.

I recommend reading Liddicoat (2010), Liddicoat and Scarnino (2013), Larse-Freeman (2001), Corbett (2003). 

They have written about intercultural issues. Probably, you can find something relevant to your project.

Notably, stylistics, as you have very rightly observed,  provides a useful link between literature and linguistics (Birch, 1985; Gupta& Srivastava, 1991).  The Handbook of Linguistics and the Handbook of stylistics are two authoritative sources by prof. Peter Stockwell, which I believe can be very useful in this regard.
