It is believed that muscular weakness after one year of post stroke patients can not be cured. Is there any advanced novel method to overcome disabilities due to chronic muscular weakness in post stroke patients?
I guess some exercises can be done even in bed, when supervisioned by a professional, to prevent or reduce muscle weakness. It's important to begin as soon as possible. Another alternative is try muscle contraction by electro-stimulation. It might help to restore part of muscle function and improve quality of life
That's an excellent question. Some research indicated that early treatment/interventions are critical for long term recovery. For example, aggressive passive and active range of movements (PROM and AROM, respectively) within the first three months have better outcomes. When it comes to AROM, it is more about the intention to move the limb rather than it is physically moving it. Further down the track, cognitive stimulation with the person's intent to move or normalise movement may be worth investigating. Targeting the sensory-motor cortex with biofeedback, magnetic and electric neurostimulations could also be a possibility.
