Hi all! I am working on soil pollution around an industry and want to develop a GIS based DSS. I have just started reading the available literature. I am having some questions in my mind and seek answers for the same.
My problem deals with soil contamination around an industry. The wastes from the industry pollutes the soil both through air and water (leaching). Soil contamination data is there. My questions are
1. What are the major parameters that needs to be considered apart from soil contamination data?
2. In case of scarcity of data, if i create a synthetic dataset (by this I mean to take the data available for the nearby area) and then prepare a conceptual model of a DSS then, how valid my work will be considered to be in the international arena?
You have mentioned about pollution around Industries. If so what would be pollution spread? may be 1km -5km. accordingly you can design your study area. Then how about collecting samples? is it be a point based collection or grid based collection? As per my view you can go for grid based collection. if so what would be the grid size? A lot of things have to be worked out. If you can define more about a your work then accordingly things can be taken up.
Who are your users? What is their knowledge domain? What decisions are they trying to make? What information do they need to make these decisions? These sorts of questions are critical at the beginning of a DSS project. For example, you say you want the DSS to incorporate GIS, but why? Will it actually help the decision maker to make a better decision? If so fine, but otherwise why add the complexity to the user interface. By taking a user-centered approach you can make sure your DSS suits the users needs rather than being a technology exposition hoping someone will use it.
One important question in your deising is the number of data in your sampling. You need 100 or 200 simples data to analysis it using geostatistic technic. Mayo be Block kriging is good option

What are the major parameters that needs to be considered apart from soil contamination data?
You have to consider 3 important thinks.
-Pollution source (type, age, VOC, hot spots, non- point -dispersion in field ect)
- Potential Pathways ( soil, groundwater, air, bio transfer, travelling time)
_ Potential targets (point, line, area, network)
Generally applied technics is random grid sampling strategy that can be use interactively and later use higher sampling strategy to isolate hot spots with geostatistics
