My problem is the following:
I’m working on measuring penetration resistance of wetland soils. In the field we do this by using a penetrologger (https://en.eijkelkamp.com/products/field-measurement-equipment/penetrologger-set-a.html). But, we want to do similar measurements in the lab on soils we collected from the field or soils we constructed our selves (e.g. sand-mud-mixtures). The field penetrologger is not working wel for this. Thus, I thought that in principle it should be possible to use the Instron for such kind of measurements. Indeed, it seems others are using the Instron for it as wel (http://documents.plant.wur.nl/wurglas/penetration_resistance.pdf). However, it seemed difficult to get more details on the protocol and system setup needed.
Thus, my question is: Does anyone have any idea how to setup and program the Instron for this kind of measurements?
Do you have borelog data for the location where you want to determine the penetration resistance?

We have field measurements using the penetrologger (https://en.eijkelkamp.com/products/field-measurement-equipment/penetrologger-set-a.html). Thus, we have an idea about the depth structure of the underground.

Maybe in the lab you need a more precise device like this one (please look at the link). Nevertheless you should note that the results of the in situ test are in function of the overconsolidation ratio, so if you try to reproduce that in the lab you should know it. Also border conditions of your soil sample in the lab might be the same as in the field, for example if you try to reproduce the results at 3 m depth, the soil is at a pressure of 3 * 1.8 g/cc * 0.98 m/s2 = 0,53 T/m2, an thus the cone resistance (sigma1) at 0 T/m2 or at 0,5 T/m2 (sigma3) could be different. I hope that can help you.
