When there are porous media involved, I would tackle the problem using a Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) . This method should give you the flexibility necessary to model accurately the porous medium under study. The programs that came to mind are:

2) openLBMflow Lattice Boltznamm 3D OPEN SOURCE CODE at

You can simulate simulate the transition of flow through coarse porous media by properly defining the heterogeneity in terms of hydraulic conductivity. In the finite difference grid of a numerical model, assign higher values of hydraulic conductivity for coarse porous media. You can also consider variation in porosity if the model permits to consider it. Modelling can be better performed using any version of MODFLOW.

When we investigate the transition of flow in soil, we can use of Darcy Equation, because only we have Laminar flow. But in COARSE Porous Media, we have both of Turbulent flow and Laminar flow (as the same as Rock-fill dam).

 Do you believe that Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) is useful for Turbulent Flow or Laminar Flow?

If you need to represent the turbulent flow I guess that the MODFLOW software would not be adequate. As it is not a classical CFD, you can try to describe the macroscopical velocities with some degree of simplification and then apply some finite element routine to increment the model performance with higher velocities than in the classical porous media flow models.

Yes, one can simulate both laminar and turbulent

flows with a Lattice Boltzman method (LBM). LBMs

allow to define complex boundary conditions, as

it happens in the case of porous materials,

very easily. As an example, you can find a two-

dimensional flow in a randomly generated porous

material of porosity 0.7 simulated with a

simple matlab script at: http://exolete.com/lbm/

Regarding your problem, I understand that the flow

can be laminar in certain areas and turbulent in

others. To simulate successfully the flow for

your application, the main question you need to

answer is: "Which scales of the flow should be

resolved?" In other words, which details of the

flow are important and which can be neglected.

My guess is that you don't need to know all the

details of the turbulent flow. At the contrary,

you need to simulate only the major recirculation

regions that can impede the flow. Once you have

identified the scales of interest, you would be

able to select a numerical method of appropriate

accuracy. A LBM could be a good choice, but not

necessarily the only good choice.

I think meshfree methods like SPH or MPS can help you and they can model the turbulent and simulate the laminar flows in porous media.

LBM is the nice method too as prof. Cortelezzi said and you can see the film of this simulation on the YouTube.

How you choose to model depends upon the resolution you seek. Since your application is seepage through a dam, the readily available MODFLOW program may provide what you need. This is not a solution of the Navier-Stokes equations for fluid flow, but is rather an extension of the Darcy equation for flow through porous media.

After that, I had to mention that I want to simulate the transition of Flow through Coarse Porous Media such as Rock-fill dams. As you know, Darcy equation are valid transition of flow through fine porous media such as soil and embankment dams. By observing the mentioned notice, do you think MODFLOW is an applicable program for this project?

Its problem corresponds to a turbulent flow in a porous medium, so when applying a software it is necessary to know if the system of equations that solve considers the condition of turbulent flow. In a rock-fill dam simulation is not required because the saturation line corresponds to the downstream line.
