Hi, I am interested to obtain phenolic fractions from crude seaweed extracts (using ethanol) and test for their antioxidant properties. Since most of the in-vitro antioxidant assays are salt-dependent, It is advisable following desalting step prior to those analyses.
So, I wonder if anyone tries to desalt crude seaweed extracts using a resin (eg; XAD 16 amberlite, Reversed-Phase C18 SPE Cartridges, Sephadex® LH-20 ) or other technique.

Dry you extract completely, then dissolve it with absolute ethanol, you will see the formation of a precipitate which is made of salts because salts are insoluble in absolute ethanol. With this method, you will precipitate up to 90 of the salts.

Depending on the polarity of the phenols. The dry absolute ethanol will remove most salt, but if you want to improve the salt removal you can also use butanol. Butanol is slightly difficult to evaporate, so if you struggle with that then it is better to use a mixture of ethanol and ethyl acetate (1:1 v/v).
