How can I "create a good mentor for trainee teacher" as he/she starts to work?

I am preparing a project for mentors in education on preschool or school level. I am interested in communicating ideas with anyone who already did that or has any experience in educating mentors for students or trainee teachers. What is important for a teacher to be a mentor? How can you be a good mentor? Who can be a good mentor? What are the characteristics of a good mentor?

I think we should first identify the role of mentors. S/he has important and valuable personal and professional characteristics. Personal characteristics include, but not limited to, many roles like guide, communicator, friend, supporter..etc, while their professional characteristics may include trainer, observer, provider of feedback, helper, assessor, ..etc.
