I have extracted RNA from a plant by QIA gene plant mini KIT. I preserved it in deep freezer to us in RT- PCR reaction .
RNA in water solution can degrade even when stored at -80; purify your RNA before storing it as a water solution and avoid multiple thawing.
It's best to keep RNA at -80 as a pellet under 96-99 % ethanol. Use ethanol precipitation protocol to get the RNA pellet.
Just after isolation of RNA you may Proceed to make cDNA and that will be safer for long time! at -20C

The RNA can be preserved at -70 degree deep freezer....you can store RNA in DEPC water, ethanol, or even formamide .....if you are dissolving in DEPC water...you can also add some RNAse inhibitor to take care of some residual RNAse contamination..

Better to preserve in RNase free free ultra free pure water rather than ethanol in -80. (-72 is also fine worked in my case). If ethanol freezes or starts to form icy things, your pellet wont be visible. (This is for short term use and works fine up to 3 weeks).
Just isolate your total RNA by TRI Reagent, when RNA pellet comes keep it in 70% ethanol up to one month in -20 or freez.
I kept RNA of a virus for 1 year in -20 and RNase free water. after 1 year, this RNA was amplified very well.
