I would like to treat my cells with decanoic acid. I have ordered decanoic acid from Sigma and it appear as a crystallized solid (5 g) in a bottle instead of in powder form. As I want to prepare a 100 mM stock by DMSO, I have to get part of it for dissolving but not dissolving all of them. Could anyone has experience in preparation of decanoic acid stock solution in DMSO?
Sorry if this answer is too trivial, but just break it up and grind with a pestle and mortar. If it is just one 5 g piece then it would be quite wasteful, but if you did it in a very clean glovebox filled with nitrogen gas for example, you may be able to store the remaining decanoic acid for longer. The melting point of decanoic acid is 31.5 ° C. Warm it by lowering the bottle into water. It will become liquid. Determine the mass. Decanoic acid is highly soluble in DMSO. To obtain a 5% solution, mix 5 g of decanoic acid with 95 g of DMSO.
