In most of the papers BIOLOG ecoplates are reported for Community level physiological profiling (CLPP). Is here any alternative to that protocol/method? because i am not finding that method feasible due to funding issues.
Do you want to characterize only bacterial communities? The Biolog can include bias towards rapidly growing bacteria. At the attachment more information about different methods to study soil communities.

Metaproteomics or metatranscriptomics should be your first options, as far as you had stored your samples appropriately, but are quite expensive methods. Not sure if metametabolomics can be performed easily in soil samples.
The cheaper/not so good alternative, is to predict the metagenome and thus the possible functions of your microbiome as a whole using PICRUSt.
