You may covert h5 to another format by using BEAM software (from Brockmann Consult), which is freely available on internet.

Use hdf5info to get information about an HDF5 file and then use hdf5read to read a data set, using the information structure (hinfo) returned by hdf5info to specify the data set.

hinfo = hdf5info('example.h5');

dset = hdf5read(hinfo.GroupHierarchy.Groups(2).Datasets(1));

If you have ArcGIS 9.3 you can use "Extract Subdataset" in Data Management Toolset. "Extract Subdataset" can open HDF files.

You can use the H5_PARSE function in IDL which stores your HDF5 file into a structured variable whose elements bear the names of the HDF attributes, and than access the bands you need.

Can you  please suggest how to map h5 dataset with gif images available from INSAT-3D data set in matlab. Because i want to perform area extraction for which i want to map latitude and longitude information on the gif image.

You can also use the software penoply for better visualization.

HDF Compass is also a good option to view .H5 dataset files.

Yes for Python, try the pyhdf package. You can try the following commands to see the Scientific Data Sets available.

from pyhdf.SD import SD, SDC

file = SD(FILE_NAME, SDC.READ) # reads the SDS within the FILE_NAME

file.datasets() # to see the SDS and their dimensions

sds = list(f.datasets().keys()) # to store the SDS names into a list named 'sds'

Using Python's h5py library, you can access different bands of INSAT-3D, MODIS, etc satellite data in HDF (.h5) format.

For windows 10, I found difficulty in opening the HDF products: HDFView, HDF compass.

Penoply software works fine to open .h5 file in windows as well. As a beginer I could not able to visulaize the 4D data cells.
