I am especially interested in determining which species of fish are part of the diet of Neotropical herons nesting in mangrove forest but to collect bolluses has not been possible because voluntary regurgitation by the nestlings do not occur. 2. Fill the crop/gizzard of bird with water by intubation syringe and then hold it upside down to get the sample.
Some studies employ ligatures around the throat for a short period, which keeps the food from being swallowed and you can then remove it. You don't want to do this for too long, however, but it has the advantage of not having to use drugs or flushing with water.
