Contrastive linguistics is a rigorous way of researching discourse within and across languages. The orientation in this type of research can be either along formal linguistics conceptual provisions or the guiding principles of functionalism envisaged by Martinet and developed by Halliday.Looking at the path along which contrastive linguistics has evolved, we can observe a tremendous growth, which is mainly oriented towards cross cultural differences existing between and among languages. The findings are motivated either by pragmalinguistic or sociopragmatic analyses of two languages based on a specified tertium comparationis. Certainly, one of the possible ways to refresh students in the classroom would be working on the linguistic directions provided by functionalism. Contrastive analysis is an important step and phase the teachers should proceed and apply in their classrooms particularly in the earlier stages of learning a target language. Knowing the discrepancies between languages is crucial to learn languages. Consequently, the teachers and students will be aware about the features of new languages which will pave the way to learn the new languages.

Teachers can encourage students to contrast the so-called micro-linguistic and macro-linguistic features, the former comprising mainly the grammatical level and thus treating the sentence as the largest analysable unit, and the latter studying language in situation and context with emphasis on the communicative function and compare their desired languages.
Also, vocabulary items with the focus on the function of vocabulary in the socio-cultural context, investigating the lexicon of two languages with the object of contrasting them, the learners can find certain aspects that require special attention.
