I would like to isolate and characterize butyrate-producing bacteria from gut microbiota. Is there a selective media that could be used for the isolation of butyrate-producing bacteria?
I know HPLC is widely used for measuring the production of butyrate, but I am trying to find a good alternative to this method.

Butyrate can be analyzed by GC also, however no advantage in duration or labour.
Measuring enzyme activity has the described pathway limitations.

Hi, and thank you for your response. It seems like a better idea to use GC or PCR to determine butyrate production. I will use four different media combined with aerobic and anaerobic conditions, and afterwards test their butyrate production by the use of PCR or GC. Thank you so much for your help!
