It depends on the properties you would like to determine.
In case you only need effective properties, homogenization procedures can be used.
For performing homogenization calculations, you can use either mean field approaches or rely on the classical finite element method.

Composites can be divided into classes in various manners.
One simple classification scheme is to separate them according to reinforcement forms:
- particulate-reinforced composites
- fiber-reinforced composites (containing discontinuous or continuous fibers)
- laminar composites
You can use The commercial available Ansys software package to create a composite physical model, define it's materials properties and boundary condition, and so solve the model (structural, thermal ...).
Via Ansys mechanical APDL you can perform the job as well by following this steps:
1. Give the Analysis a Title
2. Set Measurement Unites
3. Define the Element Type (you can define more than one element for different parts of the Model)
4. Define Material Properties (for a composite you must define Two or more Materials)
5. Create the Composite geometry (Main Menu-Preprocessor-Modeling-create...)
6. Mesh the Model
7. Define Boundary condition
8. Solve.
For example, for create a Laminar Composite physical model in 3D, you just need doing the following(after donig steps1-4):
- Main Menu/Modeling/Create/volume/block: create for example 3 slabs as composite layers
- Glue aforementioned layers: Main menu/modeling/operate/Boolean/glue/volumes/pick all
- Mesh each layer by different Material properties: Main menu/preprocessor/Meshing/mesh tools/then adjust size and click mesh then select layers for Mesh One by One.
- After Meshing the Model, Its ready for defining Boundary conditions that are necessary for Solving the Model by FE analyzer.
