According to Harel et al (2019), a drainage reversal is represented by obtuse angle of a river junction. Does anyone know about an algorithm that can detect them?

There are several potential processes ongoing that could contribute to these. Being interested in gully formation and expansion for many years, I have seen instances of catchment and even watershed capture due to gully expansion. The discussion terms of drainage reversal were new to me, not that I had seen this before. I don’t know of a standard algorithm to help, but would suggest that using LiDAR based DEM would be helpful in providing the detail if working in heavily vegetated forested areas. Tectonic uplift and aggradation of sediments from upstream contributing areas into the valley may have contributed to the divide change (wind passage as mentioned). If and as the gully headcut continues to expand, additional catchment areas will be captured, through time, producing what is described as reversals. A trained GIS person may be able to develop an algorithm for this, but many DEMs based on standard topographic maps may not always provide the needed detail. Time series LiDAR would also help looking for areas changing, especially noted after episodic major storm events or other significant disturbances such as severe wildfire, freeze-thaw events affect some soils, etc. If interested, you might look at the Chauga River (NW South Carolina) angle change along the Brevard Fault, as the head cutting of the side channel was significant enough to capture the Chauga River, changing its direction. I have found other instanced where gully expansion had altered the drainage divide, and I think I probably mentioned that in at least one of our papers. If nothing else, visual inspection of the drainage network may be necessary, as the drainage modeling I am used to has some issues to overcome.
