From theory, we can say the location of saddle would be 0.207 times of length of shell from saddle support point to Cylinder shell end. But sometimes it is not possible to maintain that overhanging length, so we would like to know how far we can deviate from standard location of saddle.
Can you build a simulated model that is scaled down? Then if you use saddles that can be positioned, you will find when the load is no longer stable. Mark that point, then calculate a safety margin. Scale back up to normal then see if it fits your build plans.
I use SolidWorks to help with issues like this, but any CAD software should do the trick.
Sir, We simulated the boiler drum as a beam element and attempt has been made for analysis of drum support location for boiler. In this work, we have deviated from standard support locations of the drum. For this newly arrived support locations we have done analysis and compared with standard design case. We have done several cases deviating from the standard design of locating saddles and observed very meagre changes in stress values and very large differences in bending moments. Finally, from this work we are concluding that very meagre changes in the stresses and deflections between standard design and newly arrived design and also these values are within the allowables. Could you please suggest why this behaviour is happening.
