I'm working on a research project and to accomplish my research objective I need to create a HAND (Height Above the Nearest Drainage) from Digital Elevation Model (DEM). I'd like to use the TauDEM tool of ArcGIS 10.2 to generate the HAND, but I'm not so clear how to use it to create HAND. Any suggestion in this regard is highly appreciated.

For best remote results, a LiDAR based DEM detail might be most helpful, or perhaps green LiDAR if the depth of the channel under relatively clear water is desired, as the channel depth varies, with riffles or shoals within a reach often the high points and pools low points. Standard topographic map contour intervals and detail can have substantial error on georeferencing location and elevation, and also one must decide what is a channel, and what is not (Perennial, Intermittent and Ephemeral). The starting drainage network and associated detail may be important to your result. Some of our papers on my Researchgate list might be helpful in considering what channel network is the reference for elevations and locations, and stream channel issues from DEMs developed from standard topographic map detail. Once the channel network and associated elevations are defined, I have no doubt that in GIS any point and elevation on the landscape could be associated with the closest channel and depth in developing a HAND. Your GIS professional or the paper provided by Dr. Khan should help develop the approach to employ based on the level of detail chosen.
