I want to redraw the SOI data from Bureau of Meteorology. (http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/current/soi2.shtml) in R. Everything is working fine, but the result is not barplot.
1. how to change this line graph into bar?
2. how to define x label that show name of the year and first month (Jan 2008)

Firstly, I wonder why you want to view these data as a barplot? The function 'ts.plot' will, by default, plot a line - this is because time series data are assumed to be continuous, therefore a continuous line is the most appropriate way to plot them.
If you definitely do want a barplot, try typing '?barplot' into your R command window. Note that barplots are a different method of plotting to ts.plot and you will have to use the raw data (i.e. not the data that have been defined as a time series object in the second line of your code above). You will also have to supply R with some more data in the form of the year of each observation. I am not sure what year your data started, but just for an example plot, I have created a column of dates from 1942 - 2013..... (To generate these data, I used the command: Year
