I have electrospun PAN nanofibers (DMF solution). stabilized at 270 degrees. Carbonized at 600 degrees in inert atmosphere. Ideally PAN fibers are carbonized from 700-1200 degrees range. But if i increase temperature to 700 degrees all fibers are lost. Can anyone help? Can FTIR analysis confirm it?
Raman spectroscopy should help to characterize the fibers (see Fennessey Ph.D. thesis, link attached). It's more sensitive to hydrocarbons with a lot of symmetry. Since these are electrospun fibers, you may be able to do transmission FT-IR as well if the fiber mat is thin enough (I did something like that with PLLA electrospun fiber mats, of course not carbonized - link attached which has the spectrum). But I think ATR-IR would give you pretty weak peaks if that's all you have as the instrument (although it's an easy experiment to do, so you might as well try ATR FT-IR as well).
