You'd have to import every reference to Mendeley first. It allows you to import various citation formats directly to the mendeley software, just drag .ris files. It doesn't have to be mendeley, you can use other software, but in order to sort it alphabetically (usually APA 6th edition) all references must be included in the program. You can export all references as bibtex, csv, .ris, etc; and import it to mendeley. When you you insert references with the Word plugin, it'll sort automatically depending which style you choose, (Chicago, vancouver, APA, etc.)
You first need to export the references from other sources(PubMed, Endnote, RIS, Torero) into Mendeley readable format. Then it is easy to import it into your Mendeley. Sorting is quite straight forward.
Where are the other list of references from? Endnote? I am not clear with your question. You need to use one reference information system for one manuscript. It is not possible turn use two sytems together like some references from Mendley and others from Endnote.
Please, I'm having similar issue. I have all my references in mendeley but, I have two word document each with its citations. Now, I want to combine the document. Please, how can I do this, so that all the references also can be merged?
Generate all references from Mendeley inside the word document. Then, insert appropriately the two references into the generated ones. Its possibl, that was how I solved it eventually.
Jeremiah Abolade : If the referencing in both the documents are done using Mendeley, it is a simple process. You can copy and paste required segments of two separate documents (including the citations) into your working document and refresh the references in Mendeley tab (MS Word plugin), should work fine. However, you have to first make sure the references that you want to work with are in your Mendeley library. If not, you will have to import them first. Hope it helps.
Sayedus Salehin Have you managed to combine Mendeley citations from two documents yourself in the way you suggest in your post? If I copy paste the text (including citations) into a second document, it copies the in-text citation marks but does not recognize these as citations (if I try to create a bibliography, it says 'no citations found in this document..'). I used Microsoft Office Word 2016 and Mendeley Cite plugin. All citations were in the Mendeley library.
Hannah Teeuw If I get you right. If you are using the same Mendeley library, and you have more than two word documents open. If you use Mendeley for in-text citation for each of the documents. If you then merge the documents together and generate bibliography using Mendeley, there wont be any problem. This I have done several times. When I asked the question initially, I was very new to Mendeley but now, I think I have a pretty good hang of it.
Hi Hannah Teeuw , I have done it several times and so did several of my colleagues. I am not sure why this is happening with you. Even if you are doing the pasting in a different computer, as long as both the computers have Mendeley installed and the references are imported in your Mendeley library, should not be a problem. If you don't have the references in your library, Mendeley will prompt you to import them anyway. Obianuju Augusta : Could you confirm if it worked for you?
I have two types of citations: website and journals, academic papers.
In Mendeley I only have the pdf of papers but not websites or magazines, or newspapers or interviews. So, I was entering in word these type of sources. And I can see that there's not an option to combine two the bibliographies. Now, what? Do I have to enter manually everything in Mendeley and re-cite all my word document?
Stefania Celi ...for the online magazines or newspaper...try if mendeley web importer can extract their references, if not...you will have to enter them manually. But for the pdfs...add them to your mendeley deskstop, import them as references when citing...generate bibliography at the end of the document and insert manually references too. I hope I have been able to provide answers to your questions?
I have written my manuscript on one computer and then I wanted to edit it on another, but Mendeley was not able to recognize the references, i.e. I was not able to add new citations with automatic numbering, rather Mendeley only numbered the two new citations, the rest remained unchanged. let me break it down in simpler words.
When I try to add new citations in my document, say at number [3], it should have been automatically updated in references section (After inserting bibliography) but it gets the number [1] in references section. Please help.
Asif Adil : Are you 'logged in' in your Mendeley account in both the computers? It seems Mendeley can't recognize your earlier citations as references rather treating them as simple text. Copying from my earlier answer: " Even if you are doing the pasting in a different computer, as long as both the computers have Mendeley installed and the references are imported in your Mendeley library, should not be a problem. If you don't have the references in your library, Mendeley will prompt you to import them anyway. "
Asif Adil : As right described by Sayedus Salehin , you will need to have Mendeley on the two systems and be sure that you are using your IDs. Also, make sure you sync your files regularly. If you sync your files regularly, you should have the same files and folders in the Mendeley account of the second computer. By the time you open your document on the second computer, if they are Mendeley referenced, then you should not have any problem.
Thanks, Sayedus Salehin and Adeyemi Oludapo Olusola, I had mailed it to my boss, who recommended adding few more references with some minor changes to the text(done by him only), but on opening it on my PC, Mendeley treated all my references as simple text. Those references were inserted with Mendeley only and my library is synced well, and I am logged in with the same ID in it.
Hannah Teeuw Did you manage to make it work?. I am having the same problem specifically with Mendeley Cite, and it has been a nightmare putting my dissertation together. Using the Mendeley ribbon plugin does not give me the same problem (but now it does not recognize my citations) so I am stuck with Mendeley cite not working T_T please help.
My Mendeley Cite has been very slow to open and while inserting citation, need to wait longer to insert it. I plan to use the normal Mendeley (Mendeley Desktop) to insert citation. But, how to merge the bibliography/reference of Mendeley Cite and Mendeley desktop (merge alphabetically)? Because when I use the Mendeley Desktop and insert click bibliography, it won't merge with the bibliography/reference created with Mendeley Cite.
I am using two systems with Mendeley installed and synched in each of them with the same ID. A part of the document is already written with citations inserted in line. Now when I am about to complete the same document in the other system, the citation numbering is starting from number [1] again. Has anyone faced this type of problem?
