It is better to consider your DV and find the IV. May be there are more IV that influence farmer's food security. After organizing your conceptual model, you can utilize quantitative or qualitative research or Mixed method. Conceptual model will be organized based on your results which you explore by reading articls and previous reseach and adding your findings using qualitative research via an open ended questionaire. You can ask from your respondent who are especialist at your DV practically. I think it is better you use mixed method to do a good reseach. 

This was an interesting issue when the Operation Flood project was implemented in India to increase milk production. There was a view that when milk producers were connected to the market & got better process for milk, they reduced household consumption of milk and sold in the market negatively impacting family nutrition security. This was studied in-depth by scholars of that time (scholars Simon Fraser University were one such team), but  that was before the internet era, so am not sure if such studies can be now located.
