Hello, I am trying to model collapsible soil in Abaqus, and I would like to change the density in each step to capture the collapse. However, I cannot use the field variable method because it can only be used to change the strength parameters. Any suggestions, please?

Try to use Material->Create...->General->Density->Distribution:(A)AnalyticalField->Create Discrete Field (context menu allows to insert rows manually or read them from file).

I don't understand why you can't use the field variable method to defining density. If you mean you used a field variable to change the strength parameters, it doesn't conflict and it can be used simultaneously for both strength parameters and density.
By the way, using the method proposed by Victor(creating analytical field distribution), it is, if I am not mistaken, used to define the density dependent on the geometric position, not step. In fact, by using it, the density distribution can be defined throughout the model geometry.
