I am doing a synthesis of solketal from glycerol and acetone. I want to know about the conversion of glycerol and yield of solketal by using GC-MS. Is it possible to calculate the conversion without using internal solvents?
Internal solvent? What is it? do you mean an internal standard (IS)?
we usually use IS for correcting the sample preparation and injection volumes faults.
If you don't have a complicated preparation step for injecting the sample to the GCMS and have an auto sampler (which is eliminated the injection volume faults), you may have your analysis without applying an IS.
With a suitable calibration curve in a proper concentration range, individuals for product and starting material, you can determine the concentration of both of them in any stage of reaction (initial, intermediate or final) and by these, the yield calculation may not have be difficult.
I'm not sure what internal solvent means. But if it is internal standard, you can either use internal standard or external standard approach for quantitation. checkout the the link below for detailed explanation on how to go about it.
