An accurate determination of diffusion coefficient for a protein would be to consider a 3-dimensional diffusion coefficients namely, translational and rotational diffusion coefficients. My question is that is the total or effective diffusion coefficient for a give protein an arithmetic sum of both translational and rotational coefficients or is there another way to determine this value?
I don't see how that is more accurate. If you combine the two you will not be able to use it to estimate how far the protein diffuses within a certain time. The most accurate would be to report the two separately.

Note: You can not add a translational diffusion coefficient with a rotational coefficient as both quantities have different dimensions.
