Some researchers employed ionic liquids with Tf2N anions to extract precious metal ions like gold(III), platinum(IV) and palladium(II). I wonder how this can work since the Tf2N will be replaced by MClx anions formed by the precious metal ions.

There were more than 10 000 papers on ILs last year, so like every popular topic there are papers which are good, and some which are less so. Generally extraction of metals with NTf2 based ILs is common, and the small amounts of halide that complex to the IL together with the metal are then easily removed when regenerating the IL.
