As papers published say, heteroatoms such as N, O, B, S or P in the porous carbon improve conductivity, wetabblity and enhance the electro-active surface area. It can be easily understood that it can improve the conductivity. But as far as I am concerned, I have difficulity in digesting its' effects on wetability and electro-active surface area. I long for your explanation or some reference books. Thanks a lot.

I found some explanation for large surface area in case of N-doped graphene where it is mentioned that due to N atom the graphene edge enlargement is conducted and previously proposed by theoretical calculations, an edge enlargement can significantly extend the surface area of graphene.

These heteroelements provide polarity that a pure carbon surface does not have, from where the dramatically increased wettability. They are also known to modify the electronic structure of carbon, hence the enhanced electrical conductivity. Finally, the surface functions in which these heteroelements can be found are easily oxidised or reduced, giving the material a pseudo-capacitance that pure carbon, again, does not have, hence the increased total capacitance value. There is an extensive literature about all these facts. Just using "N-doped carbon" as keyword will give you a significant amount of papers to read.
