Because I have been very successful at academic publishing, my dean has asked me to find ways to share my experience with junior faculty members at our school who need mentoring.
How do you think this should be done?
- One-on-one counseling (very time consuming)?
- One-time faculty colloquium/presentation?
- Non-credit seminar that meets several times?
- Graduate credit class but faculty get big tuition discounts?
- Online seminar?
I am interested in your thoughts about which would would benefit faculty most...and in which they would be most likely to participate.

Like yourself, I am often asked to mentor and support University/College/Faculty colleagues in terms of assisting publication. Sometimes it is at the individual level - but I personally find that inefficient. The exception to this is publishing with Research Higher Degree (RHD) student supervisions. For this group of emerging researchers, I also run several University-wide publication workshops per year. I find that this is an effective strategy - although one cannot gauge the impact of them interns of actual outputs.
With Early Career Researchers (ECRs) (who are often tenured members of staff - but also includes PhD students), I find that 'programmes' work best. For instance, I have co-ordinated our Faculty '12-weeks to publication' programme. It is (of course) a 12-week voluntary programme. Six weeks of it is six 1-hour sessions, with 'experts' on various aspects of publishing. The first session is centred on discussing an article that they are currently working on or want to start. Each colleague is buddied up with another that they have not worked with before. Each alternative week between the 'taught' sessions, the ECRs work with their buddies to develop their manuscripts. The final session is a presentation of each members progress to date. For some, that is a completed article sent for review; for others it is still a work in motion. I track the 'students' afterwards to eventual publication. So far - there is about a 40% publication success.

In my opinion workshop is the best approach to learn; you'll have support from both the trainers and your peers, probably they can come with their draft write-ups ready and maybe the draft can be subjected to open feedback and constructive evaluation by the expert and the learners and to avoid any sort of bias this process can be blinded.
