When studying the electrocatalytic properties of an electrode material we need to determine the effective surface area of this electrode. According to the available literature, this latter can be easily obtained by means of cyclic voltammetry measurements. Could you provide any details about this procedure?

It depends on the cyclic voltammetry (CV). In maximum cases, researchers generally use Nicholson-Shain equation. Three types of cases to be considered.
1. irreversible- Use Nicholson-Shain equation. You have to calculate charge transfer coefficient
2. reversible reaction- Use Randles-Sevcik equation. You should know concentration and diffusivity of active species and the peak current (faradaic) in analyzed CV.
3. quasireversible- Use Matsuda-Ayabe relation to correct the quasireversible peak current to reversible peak current and then apply the Randles-Sevcik equation. Use Nicholson's method for obtaining the reaction rate constant that is required for the previous calculation.

Take the Ferro/ferricyanide scan rate dependence response on the modified electrode and using the Randles-Sevcik equation calculate it.
