We are trying to check the capability of bacteria to degrade anthracene and biphenyl. We do not want any organism on the chemicals to interfere so we want to sterilze biphenyl and anthracene. We are not sure whether autoclaving will destroy the chemicals. Anyone with helpful suggestions please?
I am not sure about "sterlizing" chemicals. You can purify these either by recrystallization or sublimation. Relevant information attached.
Yeah, If you sublime or distill them, those conditions are not compatable with bacteria, so it will kill any bacteria there in addition to purifying your reagents.
David, I'm not sure if you sterilise this by autoclaving but if it is not too viscous then you may want to filter sterilise it under vacuum or use a syringe and disc filters. Just a thought.

I'm agree with Bruno, however depending the pH, the concentration and the solvent in mother solution, probably it is too dangerous environment for support microbial life. If you're able to filtrate the solution, it may become enough. As alternative, with several consecutive frozen-heat (-20 + 72 ºC) cycles you'll kill all the cells.

We use syringe filter units to sterilize antibiotic solutions for tissue culture. If you want to use filter units to sterilize your chemicals, you have to be very sure and careful that the chemicals would not have some kind of 'interaction' with the membrane and destroy the membrane, resulting in contaminating the chemicals.
