How can a teacher plan this, and what methods of instilling values in students, can I use useful references to this, and learn about international experiences in instilling values in students?
Role modeling is the best technique for the development of moral characteristics in students. A teacher should be a role model for students. Students always follow their teachers in every movement of life.
A teacher can instill values by setting a good example, creating a respectful classroom, discussing moral lessons, encouraging good behavior, and connecting values to real life.
A teacher can teach and instill values in the students by practicing those values while relating or interacting with the students. Students learn values faster through emulation of the one who is teaching and practicalities those values in real life situation. As a teacher, I can dramatise those values I want them to learn and practice them on daily basis until imbibed by learners.
I wouldn't say absolute success because no one can achieve perfection. I think all we need is trying to understand teaching and our students through the rest of of lives. Teaching is a life-long learning process. Yet, we cannot predict how risky it would be.
The best way for a teacher to teach values is through practice, that is, through teaching: respect, discipline, punctuality, commitment, dedication, truth, kindness, etc.; without practicing values, the theory gets lost in the words. Willian Wistor Muñoz Ortiz.
As a teacher, if I am deliberate and conscientious about passing on cherished values to my students, I have to demonstrate in practical terms those values. For example, I want my students to speak politely and be courteous when interacting with people, as I come to class, I should be polite and courteous in communicating with them. It boils down to passion on the part of the Teacher. Psychologists might have good theories to back up this position. Learning by doing is one of the ways out.
A teacher can plan to intentionally and systematically instill values through various strategies integrated into the curriculum and daily teaching practice. This planning should consider the following aspects: The first step is to define the values to be promoted in the specific educational context (institutional, local, national, global). These values can be aligned with the institution's mission and vision, curriculum objectives, and societal needs. Common examples include respect, responsibility, honesty, empathy, justice, collaboration, tolerance, and sustainability.
Begin by assuming that the student already possesses some values that are at least potentially humane. Teacher's job is to find out what they are by means of online student journals (not by testing)! Teacher should try to model the values that are to be encouraged.
From poverty to powerhouse – An inspiring real-life story
"In a world where specialisation is often celebrated, there comes once in a lifetime a person who integrates everything – education, social work, tribal empowerment, healthcare, sports, spirituality, culture and rural development into a singular, seamless journey.
He has brought all of them under one roof, through one vision, and within one lifetime. Professor Achyuta Samanta has not only worked in each of these areas, but he has also excelled in all of them. And he has done so through the two institutions he built from scratch: KIIT and KISS.
From a humble beginning, with no family wealth, no patronage, no institutional support, not even a bank balance to lean on, in a state that was among the most backward in India – he made the impossible possible..."
