As a former school counselor, I wish to share my own experience of motivating students. My other friends have already shed enough light on techniques to be used in classroom for motivating students. I want to add one more basic thing about student motivation.
A classroom is a multicultural place in some sense such as family background, economic background, gender, religion, ethnicity etc. As a teacher it is important to accept every student as he/she is rather than what i want them to be or what i think better for them. My personal experience says that most of the time teachers apply all techniques of providing positive reinforcement, incentives etc. to motivate them but it does not work when you do have a bonding with your students. A trustworthy bonding between a teacher and students starts when we tell them ' I love you the way you are, I accept you the way you are, I appreciate you the way you are'.
There are many articles in the web that can help you find ways on how to motivate students to study / learn. To start with a good read, I recommend the article titled Synthesis of Research on Strategies for Motivating Students to Learn by Jere Brophy. (If you are interested, just search the web for that article.)
Positive feedbacks are very important, students should have a constant sense of achievement, this would motivate them to learn. On the other hand, apporpriate amount of competitation and pressure is also important.
Eteri Kharaishvili, Students can be motivated by providing different incentives and motivating stuff within a class. There are few things which are required for gaining students attention and grabbing their attention towards study:
1. Competition is a great way to motivate students.
2. One never fail motivational method you can use with your students is giving rewards.
3. Consequences of certain actions can also be a motivator to students.
4. Varying your environment can also be just the thing a reluctant student needs to find fresh motivation. Teachers need to vary their teaching methods, never stick to one method.
5. Praise Students for what they have done in various tests and exams.
6. Relate Lessons to Students’ Lives and daily life activities
Provide a conducive / creative learning environment e.g. adequate reference books / encyclopedia, applicable computer & Internet technologies, educational virtual reality etc. so that study is a fun thing to do.
Provide needed incentive / counseling to students & help them to realize the importance of study and what are the impacts when they don't study well.
Relay students' learning to real-life scenarios / use cases & provide many examples - so that they can appreciate the learning & apply them in their real-life.
Incorporate excursion, expedition, hands on / practical exercise in their studies & get them involved so that they really understand - as what Confucius had shared "I hear & I forget, I see & I remember, I do & I understand".
Treat each student as unique person, understand his / her strengths & weaknesses and provide the appropriate / customized teaching so that s/he can excel in the study.
Encourage positive interaction between the teacher & students e.g. teacher with expressive smile, maintain eye contacts, consistent / fair treatment to students, provide avenues for students to speak up / share their thoughts etc. so that learning can be instilled.

As it is presented by the previous comments, there are many perspectives here, e.g., the method, content, process and the actor views.
Someone pointed out the methodology aspects, including its approach, strategy, technique or the tool, to motivate students in term of the learning process. The other colleagues oriented to the motivation contents following the religion, culture, etc. Another one focused on the students as its actor, however, they might seem the motivation object.in this motivation context. It is inevitable that, each student type may need specific treatment depending the student characteristic. For example, of course, the elementary school students may need the different treatments as compared to the high school students.
It is my point, besides the method, content, process and the actor of motivation process, the teachers may also need to be considered in regard to motivate the students. I believe, the teacher's enthusiasm may be one of their student inspirations.
Dear Colleagues, thank you very much for such interesting and important recommendations. Your suggestions will help me to increase students' motivation to study.
Involve students much into the class, providing real life case also make students curious and motivated to learn. Current research and especially application of the subject is a good idea.
