your question is depend on which region you want developing sustainable agriculture and have you time for that (high density of population, hunger and so on, quick social development and changing of surrounding etc.). At U.S. Department of Agriculture and connected departments you can find a very good summary of it. About sustainable agriculture take place a lot conferences and workshops worldwide also 2016. This is the best way to share experiences and you can compare the conditions, under which the developments grow.

A lot of writings on sustainability are more rhetorical than empirical and methodological. The meaning of sustainability, its indicators, methods of measurement and actual operation is a debatable issue and still needs investigation. Recently UN adopted Sustainable Development Goals are supplemented by a large number of criteria and indicators, many of which are not adequately defined for operation. Those related to agricultural sustainability fall in the same category, so there is room for methodological contribution in the area.
The attached two papers suggested and applied some concepts for measurement of agricultural sustainability. The concepts can be applied at any level from plot to sector level. There are other references in the papers
The third paper illustrates how to use community based indicators of sustainability.

Dear Eteri, I have written some articles about this subject, most of all in Portuguese. Here are two in englis: The importance of Socioenvironmental Certification in Agrichains and International mapping of certified organic chains. You can find them in my profile here at Research gate. I suggest to look for articles written by my colleagues prof. Jose Eli da Veiga http://www.zeeli.pro.br/ and prof Priscila Borin de Oliveira Claro.
