How are low HRTs connected with the increase of EPS (and consequently membrane fouling rate) in MBRs? What's the chemistry behind this?

It has been observed that low HRTs promote membrane fouling in MBRs, due to the increase in bound or soluble EPS.

Lower HRT (with substantial influent COD) causes increase in F/M ratio which keep the microorganisms in exogenous period and in this conditions bacteria produces more utilization associated products (UAP) compare to biomass associated products (BAP) in soluble EPS. In substantial presence of feed (substrate) microorganism produces more large sized polysachharide both in bound and soluble form which severely cause membrane fouling.
