I am trying to understand how genes are coded and expressed. I am an experimental psychologist with no formal background in molecular biology. For example, it makes sense that in DNA there are chromosomes which contain the molecules to form the proteins in the cell body for say skin color. Then (and please correct me if I am wrong) when you have billions of skin cells that contain these proteins for skin color, the particles which make up these proteins such as protons, neutrons and electrons emit a certain electrical charge that enters the visual system of a human observer and the color of the skin seen by this human observer is just the brain's reading of the electrical impulses emitted by these proteins? From this basic question then, if there is one pair of chromosomes that are used in the production of skin cells then is it just the positional arrangement and physical size of these proteins in the cell body that gives skin its size; and are chromosomes for skin cells somehow involved in expressing say the shape of skin fitted around the nose; or are there actually chromosomes that code body part shape without the contribution of skin coding chromosomes?
