You need to make sure you know what you need and what resources you have to achieve it. Well-defined objectives can also be a good start.

Well, it's a very interesting topic, I think that you used 8-bit MCU like Atmel in Arduino, so if you want to increase your knowledge about firmware programming, the STM32 is probably the best choice for you is also known as the 32-bits MCU, I recommend beginning with STMicroelectronics Nucleo-boards, and you could read a good book called "Mastering STM32".
