Starting an organic system without improving the soil is a recipe for disappointment.
Start with thorough testing of the soil and amendment to eliminate deficiencies and toxicities.
When mixed legume and grass are used for two years the nitrogen supply and organic matter provide the bases for high consistent cropping results.
\\In temperature wheat zone the use of winter wheat can allow the early spring interplanting of mixed legume and grass. After the legume and grass establishing the forage, hay stage is kept for 2 years.
The recharged soil is excellent for a crop like maize and in the fall-winter rye is used to give soil protection and rotation. The next summer crop can by a soybean crop and following the soybean crop winter hairy vetch is used a cover for the second maize crop in the next summer. Following the maize crop winter wheat is planted.
The manures and residues can be added back as excellent soil amendment and the animal products a valuable source of income.
After 3 years in this system, yields are competitive to commercial agrichemical yields when the soil conditions are remediated.

In my opinion the challenges of shifting toward organic agriculture are mainly economic and political. The global economy model that has been created within the last few decades cannot be supportive of alternative and peasant methods of food production like organic agriculture because the level of efficiency and yields are insufficient for competing in the global market. Therefore, industrial agriculture continues to prevail as the modern, progressive way to solve food production and security issues worldwide. Also, the theme of maximizing crop yields should shift toward optimizing crop yields to avoid an exhaustion of resources and to ensure that farming systems may recover somewhat from impacts/disturbances caused by farming practices. The social, political aspects for driving an interest in alternative, regenerative agriculture are key themes for agroecology, which in my opinion has potential to operate positive shifts toward sustainability in modern farming systems, beyond the great achievements that have been already demonstrated by organic farming.
