Specifically, how does the App calculate heart rate (beats per minute (bpm))? Is heart rate calculated from an average number of beats over an interval (if so what is the duration of this interval). Or is heart rate calculated from the R-R (inter-beat) interval immediately preceding the beat. The latter does not seem to be correct as heart rate values from the App are not equivalent to R-R values from the App (that said, R-R values do not have a time-stamp so it is also unclear to me when these values are taken).

It is better to calculate the heart rate for a full minute. Still, there are periods and physical exertion if it is moderate, high or light intensity, where the heart rate can be calculated as either 15 seconds X 4 or 30 seconds X 2.

It depends if it's on real time or just average. But clearly, RR interval should be well measured. In real time, an average is done on a 4-5 beats. Otherwise, the average is done on time of recording. The formula of BPM is simple, but the target is to have a good beat to beat interval.
