Iron oxide has three types like FeO, Fe3O4 and Fe2O3. As for iron suface, they all exit when temperature is above 570℃, and sometimes the types and contents of the composite layers are changed under certain environment. If there're methods to analysis and identify the iron ions' change ?
X-ray photo electron spectroscopy ( XPS) can help in determining oxidation state of Fe. Also if you are concern with oxide phase of Fe X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique is the best method to confirm the phase.

FTIR is very sensitive to such change in ionic bonding. As well, mass spectrometry can give you an indication for which ionic state is there.
Mossbauer spectroscopy can be used to determine the oxidation states of iron.
But, I would need to know more about your sample and type of study you do.

Hello, it seems you anneal Fe above 570 degree,
if your sample is solid, you can check your cross section part (polished it) of your sample by SEM with backscattered mode, it will give you different color indicating different phase of iron oxide. You also can check by EDX.
