I recently built an electrofuel system in which I placed RE =Ag/AgCl and WE=carbon cloth in one compartment and CE = carbon cloth in another both separated by a membrane. I then applied a constant voltage of -800mV to my system using a potentiostat (Wonatech, WMPG1000S Multichannel Potentiostat/Galvanostat, Ver 3.0) and wanted to measure the current but my voltage did not stay constant. It was varying all through.
Please any suggestions on why this is happening and how to maintain a constant voltage... Thanks
Apply another voltage : say, -500mV. Set your potentiostat in a higher i (current compliance) range. Ask for help from your Potentiostat supplier.

All three steps followed but can't still figure out what is wrong. All contacts were verified. Everything seems okay but yet the same problem. Thank you for the suggestions though.

try to vary the height of the carbon cloth in the electrolyte. Start with the minimum height of the carbon cloth(s) electrodes in the electrolyte (say 1 mm).
What is the electrolyte ?

My electrolytes are LB media for Cathode and Phosphate buffer for Anode.

I feel there might be some problem with contacts or assembly of the system. Resistance may be very high due to improper assembly. Try to check your assembly. Also, run your experiment at other voltages.
