I am looking for information on the effectiveness (penetration depth in different soil types, detection diameter - coarse vs fine roots, etc) and financial costs related to using GPR to measure root systems in tropical forest. I would appreciate any relevant information you may have to offer based on your experiences with this method.

It is so hard to use GPR for this purpose especially in the tropical environment due to the high water content which limits the GPR penetration depth and efficiency.

I used high frequency antenna by using MALA geo-Radar for such case at the south Florida university geo-park and we saw the root with high resolution. So, I am recommending and confirming the answers 1 and 3.
MMMM I'm afraid that biomass is a little vague object of research. Moreover there will likely be clay and this will greatly attenuate GPR signal. As far as roots I've seen only one experiment in a lawn in Sweden where they could say "I've seen the roots". Maybe the slides in "VERY BASIC GPR" downloadable from my page could help you.
